What this means for your lease

In plain English: tax is added to each monthly payment. Massachusetts's state-level lease tax rate is 6.25% (before any local add-on).

Cash you put down as a cap-cost reduction IS taxed in Massachusetts, so putting more cash down does not escape the tax. A qualifying rebate applied as a cap-cost reduction and positive equity from a qualifying trade-in are not taxed.

The detail

6.25% sales/use tax applied to each monthly lease payment; each lease period is a separate sale (DOR Directive 04-3, which repealed and replaced Directive 97-4). A cash down payment is also taxable. A manufacturer's rebate, paid to the dealer or to the lessee, that is used as a cap-cost reduction when the lease is signed is not taxable (Directive 1(c)). A trade-in credit applied to the lease, as a cap-cost reduction or toward payments, is not taxable when the dealer is a registered Massachusetts vendor acting in the regular course of business, tax was paid on the traded vehicle (or it was exempt), and the traded vehicle was titled to the lessee. Tax is typically built into the monthly payment.

Local add-ons

None — Massachusetts has no local sales taxes; 6.25% statewide rate.
